What Is an OEM Part? Genuine vs. Generic Explained

If you've been shopping for a replacement part for your washer, dryer, refrigerator, or any other appliance, you've probably run into the term OEM part. Here's what it actually means, and why it matters when you're deciding what to install in your appliance.

What Does OEM Mean?

OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. An OEM part is made by, or on behalf of, the same company that built your appliance in the first place. In other words, if your dishwasher was made by Whirlpool, an OEM part for that dishwasher is a genuine part produced to Whirlpool's own specifications — not a lookalike made by an unrelated third party.

Because an OEM part is designed from the original blueprints, it's built to fit, function, and last exactly the way the part it's replacing was meant to. That's why people also call it an authentic part: it's the real thing, not an approximation of it.

Genuine Part vs. Generic Part: What's the Difference?

This is where most of the confusion — and most of the disappointment — comes from. Here's the difference in plain terms:

  • Genuine (OEM) parts are manufactured to the exact tolerances, materials, and engineering standards of the original component. An authentic part is tested to work seamlessly with your appliance's other components, because it was designed alongside them.
  • Generic parts (sometimes called aftermarket or compatible parts) are made by third-party companies that reverse-engineer the original design. They're often cheaper, but they can vary widely in quality. Some are nearly identical to the genuine part; others use lower-grade materials, looser tolerances, or slightly different dimensions that cause fitment issues, premature wear, or reduced performance.

Why It Matters

Appliances are systems of interdependent parts. A single generic component that's slightly out of spec — a belt that's a few millimeters off, a valve with a weaker seal, a control board with different tolerances — can create ripple effects: uneven wear on other parts, reduced efficiency, or an appliance that simply doesn't run as well as it should.

Choosing a genuine part means you're restoring your appliance to its original factory condition. Choosing an authentic part also typically means better long-term reliability, since it was engineered to work as one piece of a larger, tested system rather than as a standalone approximation.

How to Know You're Getting a Genuine Part
